About the event

We all have a story to tell.

Airing Out the “Dirty” Laundry is an ongoing community art movement that responds to the silencing of women*, by creating space to share experiences through visual storytelling.

*Airing Out the “Dirty” Laundry holds space for all women across the intersections of race, age, color, disability, faith, religion, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, social class, economic class, ethnicity, gender identity and gender expression.

This ever-growing collection of more than 400 signed or anonymous visual stories is currently on view and joined together on laundry clotheslines in The Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte through November 29th.

On Tuesday October 20th, from 6-7pm, YOU are invited to be a part of the narrative by participating in a Virtual Laundry Day Workshop on Zoom. Laundry Day Workshops are a call for women to gather together, opportunity to listen and to be heard, and to foster the love and understanding that resists hate and injustice.

Please register here to receive the Zoom link for the event. While you are welcome to share the link with friends and family, the link is not shared publicly to ensure a safe, brave, comfortable space for all participants.

All are welcome and no prior art skills are required to participate.

Visual Artist, Andrea Downs will lead the workshop from her home and you will have the opportunity to complete your piece and then drop it off/mail it to the Arts Council of York County’s Center for The Arts 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730

Your story will be joined together with the others in the in-process virtual installation in the Perimeter Gallery and then it will be added to the larger collection and a part of upcoming installations.

Connect with women’s stories here before the event www.aotdl.org and IG @womenslaundry and you are welcome to contact Andrea directly areneedowns@gmail.com

Please consider gathering materials that you plan to use before the event starts on the 20th which could include an article of clothing to use as the base layer of your piece, fabric pieces, papers, envelopes, photographs, sewing materials, safety pins, and drawing and writing tools.
